Have you ever been bored, and want to kill sometime with friends? After you've exhausted your movie collection, failed at planning an outing, and scarfed on scrumptious-yet-unhealthy snacks, the group will eventually turn to the classic time-wasters: party games. Hangman is usually the top choice, and it usually makes for an amazingly fun experience.

What if you could take that experience with you on the go? Shantek Studios' Get High With Words tries to answer that question with its own online-ready version of Hangman. Does the pen-and-paper gameplay translate into the 21st century world of touchscreens and leaderboards? Find out after the break.

The Basics

Get High With Words is a turn-based multiplayer version of Hangman, which sounds more complex that it really is. You're given a redacted word about 4 to 8 letters long, and as the player you can guess by using the keyboard positioned below. For every wrong letter though, you lose one of the 12 chances given to get the word right. When you fail to guess the word you lose the turn as well as one of your three lives -- lose all three, and you lose the match. Aside from the gameplay, for which there's an identical offline mode, the game also has a few cool visual flourishes. The hot air balloon acts as your avatar in the game, and you can personalize it with new designs as well as buy new balloon styles using the in-game currency. Finally, special Bonuses can be bought (with the free in-game currency) save you while playing the game to give you more chances to guess, or even scrub out one lost turn.

The Good

What's not to like about a modern spin on Hangman? Get High With Words is a casual time-killer that builds atop the time-tested gameplay of the original party game. You can immediately jump into the game and know what to do, which is what the best casual games master. Of course, the hits also tend to innovate with their visual style and Shantek Studios has come up with a unique callsign for their app. The eye-pleasing and colorful aesthetic along with the hot air balloon 'mascot' makes the title stand out from the crowd, and it only helps that the operating the game itself feels just as high quality; it feels like the game has been polished to a glorious luster.

The Not-So-Good

There's not much Get High With Words does wrong, to be frank. The gameplay is based on Hangman, so it's a little tough to screw that up. When playing online matches, we never experienced any connectivity issues and it was mostly a random opponent we were frustrated with. Offline solo play also performed well, though we did discover one peculiar bug at one time. We navigated away from the game, and after several minutes we switched back using the multitasking cards. When we did so, the word we were trying to guess had disappeared and there was nothing we could do except forfeit the game to get passed it. To clarify though, this only happened once so we're not saying this is a significant problem -- it's just a minor bug that should be squashed. If we had to nitpick it would be about the keyboard, as the keys were a little too narrow and resulted in a few mis-taps.

The Final Word

The Score: 4 / 5
Get High With Words successfully translates the party gameplay of Hangman into an enjoyable on-the-go online multiplayer casual game. If you're looking for a new time-waster you can drag your friends into, this is one of your best options.
