We told you IFA 2012 was going to be an important event this year, and it appears Samsung has something much bigger in store for us. Engadget has discovered new trademark filings belonging to Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. that may have spoiled a surprising new branding effort on the part of the Korean manufacturer.
Entries for the Samsung Ativ Tab and the Ativ S have been unearthed, suggesting that this time around they are going to get all of their Windows-related efforts under one roof. We can guess its Windows-related as Sammobile has informed that the Ativ Tab will be the market name for a Samsung Windows 8 tablet while the model name will be GT-P8510. Taking that information and applying some healthy speculation, it's easy to guess the Ativ S will be a flagship Windows Phone 8 device -- most likely the Samsung Odyssey that has leaked recently.
Now we're getting very excited to see if Samsung has plans to announce these devices next week at IFA 2012, which opens up the possibility of leapfrogging Nokia's big reveal. Knowing Samsung, that kind of strategy makes a lot of sense especially with this reformed branding strategy. This is still unconfirmed for now, and by the end of the day the Ativ could really be any of Samsung's several dozen smartphone models. We'll have to wait and see what happens at Samsung's Unpacked event in just a matter of days.
