The Nokia Lumia 900 is officially yesterday's hotness, and AT&T knows it. With the carrier getting its fresh Lumia flagship ready to pimp out to new customers, it appears the carrier is showing some leniency towards their control over the 900.
According to several user reports from the WPCentral Forums, AT&T has begun giving out unlock codes to Lumia 900 owners. For the uninitiated, getting the unlock code would mean anyone can use the Lumia 900 on any carrier that the phone's bands supports — for example, T-Mobile's 2G data (or potentially 3G in supported areas). However, it's not all sunshine and roses. Two of WPCentral's editors have said they struggled and essentially failed to ascertain one of these codes, despite other user reports supporting the contrary.
It's all a bit murky, and if we were to look back to our own investigative report from this August, it casts a shade of doubt over the whole situation. Recall that when we spoke to an AT&T rep, they had this to say:
The Nokia Lumia 900 policy is the same as any other phone. AT&T will unlock phones for customers who fulfill all contract obligations or have paid the ETF.
Like we said, that doesn't exactly boost morale. But with users saying they have succeeded getting unlock codes, we guess now is a good of a time as any to give it a shot. Remember to have your IMEI number ready to go when the AT&T representative asks for it — you can find it in the About page in your phone's Settings.
