It's hard to launch any kind of new online service these days. If there's enough interest, the servers are going to get overloaded and there's bound to be some downtime.
Sure enough, the same has happened to Xbox Music on its official launch day. Users are venting about the inability to browse the music selection on their Windows 8 devices and Xbox 360s. The server problems are also affecting Zune users, who cannot access songs from the Zune Marketplace right now.
Stay patient folks, as Microsoft is attempting to fix the problems. Keep checking the Xbox Live status page for the current status.
Update: It looks as though the service has been restored. Happy streaming!
